Its another summer weekend full of things-to-do in Charlotte, NC!
by Megan McDonald
See Heath Ledger’s final performance on IMAX! Discovery Place has shows all weekend long. Catch all the dark, intense scenes on the big screen! I personally saw it opening night, at 12:01, and it was quite worth it. I will probably see it more than once! For any fan, it is a darker look at Batman and the world he lives in, and Heath Ledger will give you the chills as you enter the twisted world of the Joker. If I could suggest one thing you must do this weekend, it would be to see ‘The Dark Knight.’

Pigs & Battleships
Saturday July 12th, 8 pm (Free)
Patchwerk Playhaus
Part black comedy, part crazed-drama this is the first full flush of creativity from the late great Shohei Imamura. A U.S. fleet anchored in Yokosuka is the establishing order that the degenerate youth (one sells pigs, among other things) must revolt against. Imamura sees no difference between the military racket and the black market as subtlety is nowhere to be found in this movie. Lots of yelling and sarcasm yet the energy exerted creates a sympathetic coda: no matter how bad it gets, you must make choices and rationalizations.

Charlotte NC| Birkdale Village in Huntersville NC- The Heart of Huntersville?

Popular Birkdale Village- The perfect community mix of shopping, eatery and easy living homes
By Kelli Robinson
When the kids and I first visited the Lake Norman area, my husband had already been here two months, having started his job living in corporate housing in Huntersville. We were visiting a month prior to our permanent move here,it was a warm June day; thus, we discovered the water fountain at Birkdale Village. A huge fountain in the center of a bustling shopping and dining community. Kids sprinted through the fountain, some in bathing suits, others - like mine - fully clothed, fully wet, and fully loving it. As I sat on the shaded park bench watching my kids dash through the spray, I took a peek around and knew it was an area I wanted to visit again, and we have. Sometimes with the kids, and sometimes without.
Bir
kdale Village is a shopping, dining, entertainment, living, and working- mixed use in the real estate world, a complex located in Huntersville just off of Exit 25 of Interstate 77, in the area I call Lower Lake Norman. .
The shopping and dining venues offer a mix of chain establishments and unique boutiques and eateries. If you want to spend an afternoon browsing books, Barnes and Noble Booksellers in Birkdale Village is the closest Lake Norman bookstore to do so. On fall and winter Sunday afternoons you can catch the Carolina Panthers football games - or your hometown team’s games - on the big screens at the Fox & Hound Restaurant. When my mother came to visit, we had fun browsing the one-of-a-kind shops like Maddi’s Gallery and One Neighborhood. A few months ago my husband and I actually went on a date (parentspeak for an evening without the kids) in Birkdale. We had a wonderful dinner at Red Rocks Cafe, and enjoyed an after-dinner drink at Corkscrew Wine Shop & Bar.
What makes Birkdale Village fun is the community feel. This isn’t just a block of shops and restaurants, but rather a gathering place. During the summer months you can enjoy outdoor concerts every Friday and Saturday evening. Each December, the fountain shuts down and is replaced by a plush, velvet chair in anticipation of Santa’s arrival. In between there are fall festivals.
You know I’m always looking for summer outings with the kids, and Birkdale offers the opportunity any day, but especially on Wednesdays. We start by browsing the children’s department at Barnes and Noble, then head to the movie theater, Movies @ Birkdale. Every Wednesday throughout the summer months the theater shows free kids’ movies at 10:00 a.m. The movie is usually done by 11:30. Either that or my kids’ attention span is! We grab some lunch and, weather permitting, the kids splash in the fountain for awhile. That’s a full day, so they’re exhausted and in bed early, which always makes this mom happy!
Next time you’re in Huntersville, check out Birkdale Village. With or without the kids, you’ll find something to enjoy.

Charlotte North Carolina- Greenways for Walking, Biking or Strolling
June 7th, 2008 Categories: Things To Do Charlotte, charlotte lifestyles
The Charlotte Greenways- Experiencing Nature in the Heart of the City
By Andrew Jones- Andrew is a guest blogger writing from his home in South Charlotte.
Imagine waking up one Saturday morning in Charlotte, NC and in a flash, you grab your bicycle, head down your driveway and within minutes, you’ve left your suburban neighborhood, and headed
down a wide, well-maintained, dirt trail that winds through lush forest. You can ride for 10, 20, or even 30 miles, and never have your trip interrupted by automobile traffic. And yet, for the whole time, you are never more than a few minutes from civilization. This is what is in store for Charlotte in the near future.
The Mecklenburg County Greenway System is already one of the jewels in the Queen City crown. All over Charlotte, there are miles and miles of trails, boardwalks, and paved pathways that provide a natural habitat for local wildlife- and solitude for anyone looking to escape the constant din of the city.
The Greenways stretch from Pineville, near the South Carolina border, through the center of Uptown, the University Area, and almost to Lake Norman.
The Greenways are easy to miss if you don’t know where to look so carefully have these refuges been woven into the surrounding urban environment that. Today, there are more than 33 miles of trails in 11 separate parks. Plans are in the works to open more than half a dozen new greenways, as well. Moreover, many of these parks will eventually be linked together, making it possible to hike, jog, or ride your bicycle uninterrupted through the whole system, from one end of town to the other.
Each Greenway has its own distinct features and atmosphere; some that are primarily woodsy, and others that feature open meadows, wetlands, or dramatic rock outcroppings. All areas are full of plant and animal life, including some species that are rarely seen so close to a major city. For example, the McAlpine Creek Greenway is home to beavers, otters and minks, while the Sugar Creek Greenway provides a habitat for Gulf Coast soft-shell turtles. A huge variety of birds also call the greenways home. Feel free to bring along your binoculars or a camera, to get a better look at the action.
The Charlotte greenways are open from dawn till dusk, seven days a week, all year round. Each park is situated so that it directly borders residential neighborhoods, commercial areas, and major city landmarks. Many subdivisions have direct access trails into the system. All areas are open to foot, bicycle, and wheelchair traffic, as well as to skaters and skateboarders. Just keep in mind that some areas can be quite muddy after a hard rain.
Dogs are welcome, as long as they are leashed, and their owners pick up after them. Many parks feature picnic areas, playgrounds, and free parking.
The Greenways are cared for and maintained by the Mecklenburg Park and Recreation Department. For more information, complete with detailed maps, visit Mecklenburg County Greenways . Two easy access points are off Highway 51 across from McMullen Creek Parkway (McMullen Creek Greenway), and at the corner of Davidson Street and Parkwood Avenue adjacent to the YWCA & Belmont Center (Little Sugar Creek Greenway).
