Siskey YMCA in Matthews: a Place For the Whole Family

Matthews, NC. As I lounged under an over-sized umbrella and watched the kids play on water slides at my local YMCA, I thought to myself that this has to be the best money I’ve spent in a long time.
We started our day with a tour of the Siskey YMCA in Matthews, which has more than 30,000 members and is the largest branch by membership in the YMCA of Greater Charlotte system. Siskey is located off Weddington Road in Matthews, a quaint suburb town about 20 minutes outside of Uptown Charlotte. The YMCA there emphasizes it’s family appeal. And I have to agree. The Y has a children’s workout room with a climbing wall and kid-sized equipment. Children ages 7-12 work out with adult supervision while you work out in the grown up work out rooms or take one of dozens of classes including spinning, step aerobics and Zumba.
Next door, the youngest members of the family like my 4 month old Luke can play in the childcare center for up to two hours. There is no extra charge for this childcare service. It’s included in your monthly dues. After we drop off the boys, my stepdaughter, who is 12, and I head to a workout room that both parents and their children can use together. Then we head to the sauna before picking up the boys for a dip in the heated indoor pool.
We also stopped by the outdoor pools. The Siskey Y has two pools, one just for kids that rivals the kiddie pool at Carowinds with its fountains and water play areas.
The kids beg me to go to the Y every day and not just for the pool. They say they want to workout and that’s what they do before the pool. They’ll get me in shape, too, if they keep this up.
Siskey is just one of 24 YMCA facilities under the umbrella of the YMCA of Greater Charlotte. In Charlotte, the Y is as popular a choice as any private gym. The system has 900 square miles of facilities located in Mecklenburg, Lincoln, Union and southern Iredell counties. The YMCA of Greater Charlotte has 171,000 members, which equates to about one in ever 6.5 households being members. That also makes it the seventh largest YMCA system in the United States.
The Siskey Y in Matthews, the Harris Y in Southpark and the Dowd Y in Dilworth are among the 10 largest in the nation. Three new locations will open in the next 18 months. Five of the Y’s have water parks like the one at Siskey. That alone can make them worth the membership fees if you are looking for things to do with the kids during summer break. 
Membership fees vary depending whether you sign up as an individual or a family, and whether you want to join one or all.

Thanks Karen, I’ve been a member of the YMCA 10 years, and Siskey has been my Y of choice. However, I’m told the water slides at the Ballantyne YMCA are the best! Also, many of the nearby neighborhoods won’t offer swimming pools if they are too close to the Y–they know they can’t compete. The YMCA also has swim team and a local day camp for the older children.

Homes for Sale Report for the Montibello, Park Crossing, and Heydon Hall Neighborhoods
The neighborhood of Montibello, located between Carmel Rd and Rea Rd, is an upscale neighborhood with easy access to Carmel Country Club and Southpark Mall. A long time Charlotte favorite, many homes have had substantial additions and remodels. Olde Providence, just off Old Providence and Rea, is another in close subdivision with loads of tall trees and curb appeal. Park Crossing is an all brick classic, minutes to Rt 485, great trees, homes and tennis, with major shopping 5 minutes away, and Uptown Charlotte only 15-20 minutes away.
