Labor Day In Charlotte- Festivities and Concern for The Gulf Coast
September 1st, 2008 Categories: Charlotte News and Politics, Things To Do Charlotte
School started for most last week, and this Labor Day Monday has our eyes turned to the Gulf Coast, as Louisiana, Texas, Alabama and the pan handle of Florida prepare for what appears to be a major hurricane.
Now for the best map and blog for storms I’ve seen (thanks to my evacuated son Andrew) That’s Hanna on the right.
3 Years after Katrina, is the city better prepared? Clearly, the evacuation orders were taken seriously this time and seem to be progressing well. But what of the levies? Will they hold? Will the newly rebuilt homes, buildings and towns survive?
All good questions to be answered in the next several days and weeks. Thankfully, the coast is deserted.

If its Labor Day in Charlotte, then its Matthews Alive for us, here are a few photos from last year’s festival. They are all thumnails, click to enlarge.

Drought Over in Charlotte
August 30th, 2008 Categories: Charlotte News and Politics
It’s not official yet, but 11″ of rain fell in parts of Charlotte earlier in the week as the remnants of Hurricane Fay spent a couple of days in the Carolinas, causing major flooding in neighboring Cabarrus County, as well as some local flooding here in Charlotte as well. The lakes are full, but will the water restrictions come off? My guess is they will be eased, but not removed.
It is hard to estimate how much this has affected our business, but out of state clients have been being asking about it for over a year.

No doubt you’ve noticed the Lake Wylie map on left, it will be changing Sunday to this new South Charlotte map. We are working on improving the inter-connectivity of our site all the time. Stay tuned below as I make Google maps go to work for you!
Lets check some distances out– Say from Charlotte to Waxhaw. To do this, go to the Larger map, viewing the left size click on measuremtn tool, makeyour first make with a left click, drag to the 2bnd and click agai, and you get something like this (this map is Not live, I’ll explain later)

or, from the Sanctuary to Soutpark–21 miles
Once you add the Distance Tool, or other User map, you can longer embed the map as I did on the top map. You have to work it in Google. So let the games begin.

Charlotte’s emergence on the food radar — a recent and welcome debut — combines fascinating ingredients: a surging urban renaissance, support from the country’s No. 2 banking town, and fresh talent from the newest campus of Johnson & Wales University. This well-respected culinary school’s 2004 relocation from Charleston, South Carolina, cemented Charlotte’s position as the South’s new food city.
The restaurant revolution
You may remember Charlotte as a steak-and-potatoes place, home of the country club rib eye. That was before the banking boom brought an international workforce and a diverse market hungry for fine dining. Sophisticated palates demanded more — and got it.
Now the restaurant revolution is in full force. Take our neighborhood-by-neighborhood tasting tour.

North Carolina| North Carolina Global Transpark
July 25th, 2008 Categories: Charlotte News and Politics
Kinston North Carolina- Global Transpark Lands First Major Tenant
Normally our posts here deal directly with life in Charlotte, NC or with Charlotte real estate news. Every once and a while however, an event of significance for the state of North Carolina may find its way to the front page. The opening of the North Carolina Global Transpark is one such event and is destined to bring jobs to all parts of North Carolina.
What is the Global Transpark? It is a large (over 2400 acre) public/private partnership that has built a commercial development center outside of Kinston, NC with a focus on the aeronautical industry. The Transpark boasts the largest private jet runway in the state at 11,500 ft and a and a 33,000 sq ft conference room/training center. The Transpark is part of a concerted effort on the part of the state to bring well paying jobs to the eastern North Carolina economy. Legislators have seen the economic success of the Charlotte and Research Triangle Areas and are now turning their eyes east to a part of the state that was, until recently, dominated by tobacco growers.
Governor Mike Easl
ey announced in May that Spirit AeroSystems Inc., the world’s largest independent supplier of commercial airplane assemblies and components, will open a manufacturing plant at the Global Transpark. This represents an investment of approximately $571 million dollars and will add over one thousand jobs to the area. The tenants of the Global Transpark are mostly aeronautical or logistics firms who need access to a runway and large warehouses or hanger space. The Transpark is also located near two deep-water ports, several good highway and the state capital, Raleigh. All these factors have led to high demand for site space by logistics firms.
The Global Transpark has the opportunity to shift the area’s economic focus, increase well-paying jobs in the area, and re-invigorate one of poorest parts of the state of North Carolina. Creating better paying jobs was the goal and the addition of Spirit AeroSystems at the Transpark is a step in the right direction. As for Charlotte and the rest of the state, we expect ancillary investments from the Transpark as companies move to the area to provide “just in time” products and services to this new industry group.
