The North Carolina Research Campus in Kannapolis, NC
is past the halfway point in construction and the shape is becoming clear to all. The North Carolina Research Campus (NCRC) is the brain child of billionaire David H. Murdock, the CEO of Dole Food Company, and will be one of the premiere bio-research facilities in the nation. Participating universities include Duke, UNC, NC State, UNC Charlotte, and several other universities across the state. The NCRC is a private-public venture meaning that private research companies will also be setting up offices on-site. The NCRC will be focused on discovering new and innovative solutions in the fields of nutrition, health, and biotechnology.
The first section of the campus that is slated to open is the David H. Murdock Research Institute (DHMRI), which will open in mid-2008. The DHMRI is funded through a private grant from Murdock and will focus on health and nutrition studies. The DHMRI will house the world’s first actively shielded 950 MHz NMR, a super-conducting magnet which will allow researchers to delve deeper into health and nutrition studies.
Soon after the DHMRI opens, the Center for Agricultural Genetics will open with other research facilities finishing construction and opening within the next two years. Kannapolis is located approximately 30 minutes north of Charlotte and the NCRC is expected to bring several hundred jobs to the area. In addition to the universities participating in the NCRC, a variety of companies have purchased office or laboratory space and will be moving in shortly. The companies include Dole Foods, Red Hat (an up and coming free-ware software company), Pharmaceutical Product Development Inc., and Carolina Healthcare Systems, amongst others.
